Sunny King Criterium Raises Funds for Cancer Research and the Anniston Community in Need

The Sunny King Criterium is more than just a bike race to the Anniston community, it also provides funding to those a part of the local chapter, Meals on Wheels. The event helps to raise funds for the Interfaith Ministries of Calhoun County. Money raised through selling advertising in the Official Noble Street Festival Guide helps to fund the annual budget needed for the Meals on Wheels lunch program. The Meals on Wheels mission is to provide a hot, nutritious lunch to our neighbors who are physically unable to leave their homes to shop for groceries and prepare their own meals. Funds raised from the Sunny King Criterium and Noble Street Festival guide help the residents in the local community in the cities of Anniston, Oxford, and Weaver.

“Thanks to the Sunny King Criterium and Noble Street Festival and its event guide, 52% of our Meals on Wheels recipients receive diet specific meals at no cost,” said April LaFollette, Executive Director of Interfaith Ministries. “With our program delivering over 22,000 meals last year, and being on track for even more this year, this funding is vital. Interfaith Ministries is grateful for the work it allows us to do in our elderly and homebound community.”

In Addition to supporting the Interfaith Ministries Meals on Wheels program, since 2002 the Sunny King Criterium has donated more than $130,000 to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life chapter of Calhoun County for cancer research and patient support.

“This event is always a highlight for the volunteers that come out and work in honor and memory of those that have been affected by cancer,” said Sherrie Carter, volunteer coordinator for SKC. “However this event is personal to me, as the mother of a childhood cancer survivor and a cancer survivor myself. I know how important donations are to our local community. These donations help with local transportation grants and help fund research so that one day there will be no more cancer!”

Like we say “There is no finish line until there is a cure for cancer. We appreciate the opportunity to provide The needed volunteers in exchange for a donation to Calhoun County relay for life.” This year’s annual Relay for Life of Calhoun County Walk & Run Fundraiser will take place on June 23-24th, 2023 at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds.
